Today was Canberra Marathon No.3. I was hoping for a run around 3hrs 30min. but really anything faster than last year was acceptable.

I was positioned well at the start and ran the first 10km loop really well and was about 5mins ahead of 3h:30min pace. The first out and back and I was still 2min in front and the green pacers balloon was about 100metres in front of me.

I rounded Bowen Drive for the last out and back and my left glute started cramping. I kept running, hoping to run it out but it started to bite harder so I had to walk and try and stretch it out. The rest of the run was a case of run walk. The 3:45 pacer went past just before I went up the Commonwealth Ave ramp.

Mixed emotions about my run. I really think I let a very good run slip though my fingers but I am happy that I was able to tough it out. I must sort out this problem of reoccurring cramps because they are messing with my ability to put is solid performances.

Well done. That's a shame about the cramping. Sounds like a salt imbalance. 'Over-drinking' lots of plain water pre-race to hydrate can 'dilute' the salts in the blood.

Try a salty meal the night before the next long (faster) training run and see how that goes.
