Well I guess it was bound to happen at some stage but for any runner the words Did Not Finish (DNF) are a bitter pill to swallow. This is especially true if it's your first one and the gap between finishing and not is a slim one. Two Fruits I know exactly how you felt last year!
For the second time this year blisters have been my downfall. Not small blisters but the kind that cover the entire ball of your foot. It's something I will have to work out and find a solution for.
So what of my race at Centennial Park. Well it was a beautiful sunny day which got quite hot for those of us used to running in cooler temps. I ran consistent laps at the start and was well inside a 10hr finishing time with the first 25km done. I could feel my foot getting hot at about 30km and a decent blister by 40km. I knew from my Tan run that there was nothing that could be done so I kept running. The blister burst at about 45km but it didn't stop me running.
I got to 86km, 4 laps to go. The equation - one and a half hours left, four laps that were taking 30 mins each = short by one lap and a DNF anyway. So I made the decision not to continue. Was it the right one or not. My head tells me it was soft but once the timing chip comes off your shoe theirs no going back. In hind sight maybe I should have should have just kept going until the final bell.
Time to sit back and rethink my running. This year I have done four 12hr/100k runs.
Injinji Canberra 12hr - ran for 12hrs but missed 100km by about 2km - Fail
Sri Chinmoy 12hr - ran for 12hrs but missed 100km by 6km - Fail
Tan 100 - ran 100km but a slower time than last year - Pass
CP100 - ran 86km and then pulled out four laps short, first DNF - big Fail.

Bugger! Sorry to hear that. Even though you rate it a 'big Fail' you got damn close. If it wasn't for the blisters it would have been a 'big pass', so yes, figure out how to prevent that problem & you'll achieve your ultra goals.
Don't be too hard on yourself. You have achieved a lot. Rest up. Take some time off (as in totally off) and then run shorter for (quite) awhile until the foot robustness and emotional preparedness is restored. Think 2013.
damn but wow an amazing effort! hang on to the positives.
A big pass mark today on Mt Tennent a week later. May have been slow, but a good day. Damm Bryong can move on the down hill
